The Mangala Mantra

Probably those of us who chanted the Mangala mantra at the end of our practice either did so with a little bit more fervor today and might have ended up blubbering a bit there at the end. Our teacher was kind enough to write this at the bottom of the stair entry way:

“Don’t be discouraged by your incapacity to dispel darkness from the world. Light your little candle and step forward.” Amma

    • Very well chosen right? It really set the tone for practice today. It took care of the dedication, the focus, and the resolve to stay in the present moment. This horror took place a few miles away from our shala, but I think people who live thousands of miles away feel the same thing we do…..

I definitely do. And while I don’t think it is right to demonize anybody (including
the shooter), I also don’t think any one of us can be truly safe unless we take some kind of collective “meaningful action” (quote courtesy of Obama) to prevent such tools of mass killing from falling into the wrong hands.

Actually, maybe we need something even more drastic than that: Maybe a referendum to amend or even get rid of that outdated second amendment? I mean, if those in power really want to get tyrannical with you today and strip you of your freedoms, what good would having a (automatic?) weapon do?

But I’m really rambling now. So I’ll stop.

  1. Chanting really eases everything for me and I do it a lot. I live north of where this unthinkable tragedy happened and my yoga group gathered at one home Saturday night to chant mantras for all those souls and griefstricken. It helped lighten my heart at least a little and nice to be with friends.

    • Hi Chloe, There is a Solstice Kirtan scheduled at my practice space for last night, and I am sure it helped a lot. I don’t think I would have been able to use my voice like that yesterday…
